CHALLENGE

Animate a short kinetic typography video that is timed to a specific song. I chose Caravan Palace's "Mirrors" for this project.

Research & Design

This was a short project, meaning I had little time to delve into research and design before starting production. After this brief phase, I went straight into creating the video.

Exploration

First Pass

Instead of creating style frames first and then moving on to animation, I moved straight into After Effects and began animating the whole video. For such a motion-heavy, timing-focused piece as this, I wanted to start animating as soon as possible and just iterate and edit as I went along. This provided a much faster workflow for myself, and I enjoyed it a lot since animation is my favorite phase in any project, so I was happy to get to it early on. After animating, I exported my style frames from AE for presentation purposes.

Final Deliverables

Beyond the 16:9 video at the top of the page, we also needed to deliver a 1:1 version. I cut down the width on my frames and slightly modified a few of them in order to preserve the overall compositions.
