The 12 Principles of Animation
Explainer
2025
Teammates: Ryan Cross, Sophia Zhang
CHALLENGE
Craft a fun and informative explainer video that visualizes each of the 12 Principles of Animation in a simple way using graphic shapes.
Task Organization &
Asset Preparation
I worked alongside Ryan Cross and Sophia Zhang throughout the entire project, from concept to final execution. One of the first thing we collectively did was divide all the 12 principles among ourselves so that each person only needed to work on their assigned 4 principles. I additionally designed and animated the main opening title and the principle title cards.

After a bit of moodboarding and some talking, we arrived at an art style to cohesively use throughout the video. I created and shared a few key assets, such as the circle, square, and background dot pattern, in order to keep them as consistent as possible throughout all our work. We individually created any extra elements that were needed according to the principle, such as platforms and slopes. Minus the background dot pattern, every single visual element was created within After Effects to keep our pipeline as streamlined as possible.

The principles I was in charge of storyboarding and animating were: Anticipation, Secondary Action, Solid Drawing, and Appeal. Because of this, everything I show here will only relate to those principles.

MOGRT Preparation
The final video needed to be edited together in Premiere Pro, with the principle title videos functioning as MOGRT files in order to allow the editor to easily change the principle name and number for each scene. After setting up the Essential Graphics panel in After Effects with all the necessary controls, I sent the MOGRT to Ryan Cross, who edited the final video.
